The Scene Book

The Scene Book: A Primer For the Fiction Writer, Sandra Scofield, New York 2007

Some books are excellent resources in a class. An instructor can take the information presented, draw your attention to key concepts, point out flaws with theories and offer alternatives, reinforce the valuable concepts found within. Perhaps more importantly, they can take dry material and liven it up.

The Scene Book would benefit tremendously from being taught in a classroom environment. Scofield is very knowledgeable about her subject. She presents a tremendous amount of information in manageable chunks. She also does an excellent job of recommending books and movies as an adjunct to the material presented to work her exercises with. It is an excellent system.

It is also quite dry and can be difficult to wade through.

Anyone learning how to write should definitely read this book and work the exercises, but find a partner to wade through it. It will improve your writing and make it much easier to read. The information is valuable enough to make that a worthwhile use of your time and energy.
